Active School Flag

Active School Flag and Be Active ASAP

Active School Flag (ASF) is a Department of Education and Skills initiative supported by Healthy Ireland. The award recognises schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. It is open to primary and post primary, special schools and Youthreach centres in the Republic of Ireland to apply.

The ASF process requires schools to self-evaluate across three areas: Physical Education/Physical Activity/Partnerships. Thereafter schools are required to plan and implement improvements that will have a tangible effect on their school community and will satisfy the ASF Success Criteria.

BE Active ASAP can help schools wishing to achieve the Active School Flag:

Physical Activity - Extra-Curricular Activities
The Be Active ASAP is designed for seven/eight-year-olds and takes place for approximately 50 minutes immediately after school on a selected day every week throughout the year

Partnerships - Working with Parents
Parental involvement in the Be Active ASAP is a crucial aspect of the programme. The Be Active ASAP uses school facilities, is led by teacher leaders and supported by volunteer parent leaders. The programme aims to improve the attitudes of both children and their parents towards physical activity and lay the foundation for positive, lifelong physical activity habits

Partnerships – Working with National Agencies
Be Active ASAP is driven by a national working group consisting of members of the HSE, the Irish Sports Council and St. Patrick’s College.

 Active School Week

Active School Week (ASW) is an integral part of the ASF process and schools wishing to obtain the ASF must organise an Active School Week as part of their annual school calendar.
